Obama wins Nobel Peace Prize - does he deserve it?

After barely nine months in office, US president Barack Obama is awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. "Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," Committee leader, Torbjørn Jagland justified the choice.

Obama and his administration were not told about the win until 6AM this morning. The Norwegian Nobel Committee decided not to inform Obama before the announcement because it didn't want to wake him up. "Waking up a president in the middle of the night, this isn't really something you do," Jagland explained.

It is disappointing, however, that treating "everybody" the same only applies to the people in Norway, including the Norwegian royal family which wouldn't have been awarded the same sort of reverence and respect that president Barack Obama did. Bizarre, since this is news that every human being would not mind being woken up for.

And isn't this a great public relations step towards getting the US to work closer with Scandinavia on the political map? Very smart, well done. Let's just hope that Obama finds a free slot in his schedule for a trip to Sweden to pick up the award, eh.
